Roadtrip

I had two gift vouchers burning holes in my pockets, and came home with a handful of neons for the blackwater tank, some Emerald Eye Rasboras for the Edge (They currently reside with the guppies and the badies until the Edge is set up.) and five teensy little Heterandria formosa for the little hexagon in my office. They’re all happily swimming around in their respective tanks.

I’d been reading an article about them this past winter and was thinking how much I liked them and how unfortunately one never saw them in the fish stores. Needless to say, these guys came home with me. They should be fine in my community tank which is well established and has only tetras, cories and Rory, the Ranger Pleco. *keeping fingers crossed*

Ranger Rory has grown to respectable proportions. When I first got him, he was half the size of the cory below him. It’s rare that he presents me with an opportunity for a full length shot. Usually he dashes into hiding as soon as someone approaches the tank.

I’ve been thinking about that before, them preferring soft, acidic water and all, but hadn’t quite dared. But apparently it’s totally possible. Talked to a guy who does it all the time, and only supplies a bit of electrolytes. As soon as the rain barrel is back up (which should be soon), I’ll have to try this.

I cleaned the big tank today very carefully, and left out the corner where I first spotted it, though I don’t know, of course, if it’s still there.

The minnows downstairs have spawned again, and I keep siphoning those itsy bitsy eyelashes into the safety of the breeder inset, but the silly things keep swimming back out thru the slits to where the adults are waiting for a snack. We’ll see if any of them survive long enough to become too big at least to fit thru the slits.
In the big tank meanwhile I saw a single, I believe it’s a cory hatchling, since it hides in the gravel, and the cories are the ones who spawn frequently. I’m always surprised when one of the eggs survives despite the ever hungry tetras, and at this point I don’t think the hatchling’s chances are quite 50/50 yet. Nevertheless both the tiger and I keep peering in to see if we can spot it (we’re a talking about 3mm length here and the thickness of a sewing thread with a pin head attached) and we’re keeping our fingers crossed for it to survive past snack size.

I wasn’t really prepared to deal with those. Have to read up on what conditions they need.
My assassins are also doing well. I keep seeing little ones poking out of the gravel. And the cherries are doing their thing without my meddling.

Posted by Anja on January 12, 2010 at 14:50 | Last modified: July 9, 2012 17:12Ok, that didn’t go quite as planned. Preparing to stain the shelf boards, I suddenly realized I’d have to move the 5 gallon tank first.
Which involved finding unwinding and pulling out all the cables, plus finding unwinding and pulling out all the cables on the big tank, reinstalling the cable chaos of the big tank in a non-chaotic way, and such that the little tank might be hooked up there too.
I then realized that the tank was too heavy to move. So, water out, move tank, reinstall all the cables, start to put water back in.
But there are cherries in that tank, and I took out about 2/3. If I replace all that at the same time, the cherries are gonna go belly up, so now I’m replacing a quart at a time.
I also realized that there’s condensation inside the glass of the heater. That can’t be good, right? I’d better look that up.
The good news is, most of the cable chaos is now under control and the 5 gallon tank has been moved to its permanent position.
The bad news: I haven’t even started on the boards yet.

Posted by Anja on April 3, 2009 at 19:51 | Last modified: July 9, 2012 19:54A while ago I rearranged my 25G a bit, took the flat rock out that was the roof of the cave and added more wood instead. No more neons, and I also sold the skyblue tetras again. They were too hyper and scared the pants off my glowlights, little emo kids that they are.
The plants have been growing slowly but nicely, I found out what works and what doesn’t with under 1 wpg and added a couple more anubias. They thrived under the neglect of my recent vacation and awarded me flowers. Yay.
